Salt Mine Berchtesgaden

in 83471 Berchtesgaden, Bavaria (DE)

Go on an expedition into the salt..

Deep down underneath the “Salzberg” mountain a secret world awaits your discovery.

Berchtesgaden Salt Mine has been in operation without interruption since 1517. Salt does not occur here in a pure form but is released from the mountain with the help of fresh water in “wet mining”. For many years, only the salt miners were allowed to enter the complex tunnel system.

Today, part of the mine is open for visitors. After dressing in specially made overalls, a little train leads the visitor into the depths of the mountain. In the Salt Cathedral the digging of salt is explained by wonderful lights. The 40 meter long miner´s slide takes the visitor down to the next level. The guided tour continues in the tunnel, past the salt grotto in mystic lighting and memorials of earlier salt mining. In the Treasure Room questions about the whole salt range are answered playfully in different languages. In a ferry the visitor crosses the Mirror Lake seeing a fascinating composition of sound and light.
